Looking forward to Anthony Bourdain Parts Unknown Newfoundland tonight

Having lived in Newfoundland for several years (and loved every minute of it) - I want to see if he has their culinary traditions right.

Salt cod - yum

Navel beef (salt beef a la British Navy) - sold in the ubiquitous "beef bucket" - no refrigeration required.

Hard bread (Purity brand hard tack)

Salted cabbage

Fish and Brewis (salt cold and stewed hard bread) - yum

Jigg's Dinner - salt beef, potatoes, turnip, cabbage, carrots - boiled to death - yum

Pease pudding - dried pease boiled in a "pantyhose" peas bag along with a hunk of salt beef - yum

Moose and caribou - if your lucky

Kraft dinner and fried baloney - a staple

Flipper pie - made with fresh seal flipper in the spring.

Bakeapples

Partridge berries

Capelin - sun dried

Tickle aces - alcids

Screech -

Cod sounds

Cod tongues

but no longer do.....the emphasis is too much on food and him stuffing his mouth,,,....and not enough about the people in general and other traditions other than food.
