DU Album of the Day: "Closer to Home" Grand Funk Railroad

Dismissed by some know-nothings as "boring and clichéd" or worse, this third album from Mark, Don and Mel is a testament to a new post-Beatles direction in popular music. Released in 1970, the trio breaks new ground with every track, carrying us closer to a new home and further from a 1960s pop that had run its course.

The closing track is one of those "good as it gets" tracks that reminds you that the 1970s have been underrated by many a music snob. Passing from acoustic to rocking to an ethereal coda, the song tracks a man's final, violent end and the beginning of a new, more peaceful and serene journey. Occasionally imitated, sometimes copied, but the original continues to stand the test of time.
