POLL: How do you spend the Memorial Day holiday?

I'm going to a local Memorial Day outdoor service this year and I wonder what others are doing as well.

Supposed to be 90 here tomorrow, I am thinking about skipping the usual grill cooking and just making a very un-Memorial Day-like crockpot lasagna.

My admiration to all those who attend outdoor memorial services. I just can't take heat and humidity like that any more.

probably walk over there briefly to see his name. It is only about a block away. Then probably cook out, weather permitting.

Each day is a a day off. I will remember my husband (Vietnam), my dad (WWII/Korea/Vietnam), the kids in the family who are now serving, and all those I do not know. My respect and love to all of them.

I am the only one left who was with them when they passed, the memories of that will never leave me.

But what lives they led, and in doing so created and shaped my life.

US NAVY and US MARINE VETERANS.

AKA "The Colonial" which has been a stop on the PGA tour for a long time.

The Colonial Country Club sets up a private hospitality venue in the ballroom section of the building called "Patio Club". A specific daily ticket is purchased to get in, where one enjoys unlimited beverages, two food buffets, air conditioning and comfortable seating. There is a wrap around patio with views of the 16th hole and the 17th tee box.

I am one of the check in people. We punch a hole in the large plastic ticket and tie on the wristband of the day. We also spend a lot of time explaining the various levels of clubhouse and course access, general directions and Patio Club. Lots of folks from all over attend; we had two regulars from Australia who were in the Patio Club for all four days; they loved Fort Worth!

We get to eat in the employee cafeteria (yummy food, for which Colonial is rightly famous). Lots of good snacks, salad, hot food and scrumptious desserts.

This is a temp paying job; I did it last year and really had fun. By next March I will be ready to do it all again.

This tournament has had corporate sponsorship for a very long time, most recently Dean & DeLuca. D & D bailed on the tourney five months ago and there was a huge scramble to get local sponsorships for the event. American Airlines, Lockheed, XTO, BNSF, and other locally based corporations pitched in and kept the tournament going, thus assuring the approx $45 million it pumps into the local economy was not lost. For the next four years, the sponsor will be Charles Schwab.

There are two major annual events in FW: The Golf Tournament and The Stock Show, both of which have a huge impact on the local economy.

My wife and I took a 4 mile walk. I have read two books. Worked a few crossword puzzles. Recharging for what I anticipate will be a busy week.

My weekend was getting the truck and trailer ready to drive 3/4 of the way across Washington state to Moses Lake from Bremerton.

I take my 83 year old Mother camping for five trips a summer each year, keeps her happy and involved.

But I'm here now so my vacation weekend just started finally.

I did visit my Fathers and Uncles graves and spent some time with them first though, it's important to me.

Gone but never forgotten.

It's only 20 miles from here. There are 144,000 buried in that cemetery. And everyone in this town is a vet. I just did not want to go to a cemetery traffic jam.
