I often wondered if there wasn't a sly dig at the trick they tried to pull on Dallas a few years earlier when the whole season turned out to have been a dream. Although I never watched that show, I remember the humiliating comments by almost everyone.

In any case, I loved Newhart, and watch two episodes every day on one of the new channels running old shows.

8. Ah! I remember this well!

I was responsible for the CBS TV listings at the time and this was my "best bet" of the week! But it ran just a minute or so long and the local station here (Albany, NY) didn't account for it and cut off this most essential ending! All hell broke loose - they were deluged with outraged phone calls (including me!) and they were forced to reair the entire episode...
