We've had "dummy" foals that could not stand or suckle. It's heartbreaking to wait for a new life, have a living youngster, and then realize it just cannot survive no matter what you or the veterinarian do.

One of ours, the vet took to her house, spent the night milking the mare and putting a tube into the foal's stomach to feed it. It made no difference - at four AM when the vet went out, the mare who had been staying by her foal had walked off and would not come to be milked. The foal passed away in less than an hour after that.
