How long will it take for a letter to be returned due to lack of postage?

The last thing I saw as I dropped the letter in the mailbox was my return address sticker but no postage stamp.

1. pretty long..30 days

it is low priority..my pal is postman...however, they may charge the recipient...they did that with my sister once...a personal letter..

Earlier this morning I unsuccessfully tried to pay using my computer.

5. Usually the post tries to get the person receiving the mail to pay the postage.

6. think this is just for personal letters

not a utility or business...everyone would do it...

7. I did it twice over many years and got them back the next day

but I live in a small (3500) town and everybody knows everybody

9. Just 48 hours last time I did that.

It was an experiment: Reverse the to: and from: fields, leave off the postage and get your letter delivered for free!

It worked too but I didn't go for an encore.

10. Depends entirely on when it's "caught"

If a carrier catches the problem before it gets to a distribution center, a day or two.

If not... oy. Who can say?
