The DU Lounge
Related: Culture Forums, Support ForumsJust got back from vacation on the Outer Banks of NC.
Had a lovely time after the weather finally broke. No interesting tales from the ferry docks other than their office blaring Fox News. There was a ferry flying Blackbeard's flag, but no Trump flag. Did see a couple of houses still with Trump flags/signs, and we did keep passing this house with a large sign that showed a pic of the White House that said "Promises kept. Draining the swamp." Such a shame. Felt sorry for the person that lives there to be of such low IQ and intelligence (using Trump's language). The house was before the alien house when you're coming from the ferry. Stopped at The Great Machipango Clam Shack in VA on the way home and saw they were selling "Congressional a Term Limits Now" bumper stickers.

(31,999 posts)We vacationed there a few times before we got married and then again once when our boys were teens. I remember a great restaurant, The Tale of the Whale, and eating freah mackerel stuffed with crabmeat ... Oh my.
We got our mini van stuck in the sand off the side of the road coming home from Pea Island. Lucky for us we had 3 strong boys push it out!
What a shame such a beautiful place has been infested with maga believers. I hope they are few and far between.

(11,915 posts)But when we went down before the previous elections, I would say that area was leaning Hillary by sign placement, bumper stickers, etc. just like it had Obama in past elections. What was scary last time was camping at a campground in the Emerald Isle area (lowered than OBX). Almost every freaking campsite had something Trump related - we're talking hanging from awnings, flagpoles, signs in the ground or windows - as did most business and homes in town.
Re: our vacation. We didn't go into the water much with storms and rip currents going on, plus they pulled a 13' hammerhead out of the surf near Avon on one day, and the next day pulled an 11'. We did a lot of shelling and exploring, especially on Ocracoke. We had an awesome meal at Diamond Shoals restaurant the last night and found several new eateries on Ocracoke for breakfast and lunch during the week. And of course, always have to stop and have a meal at Howard's Pub and Goombay's at some point in our stay.

(31,999 posts)Frightening about the sharks .... too bad the conditions weren't too good for swimming.
Now you make me want to go back. When you have kids with you, you sort of have to stay in family friendly pursuits. I'd love to explore Ocracoke a little more.
That camp site you described -- all the Trump lovers --aack. I hope they've been "re-educated" by now.

(1,999 posts)We're stopping off in Arkansas and Tennessee on the way for a family reunion of my own. I was adopted, and my birth family found me via Ancestry.com (surprise!). I'm meeting a couple of cousins and my half-brother and niece. Exciting and scary.
