Name something you will not eat, under any circumstances, at a potluck dinner or picnic

For me, it's anything with mayo. Some people don't understand it has to be refrigerated. There are other things I won't touch, but if it has mayo in it. that's an automatic deal breaker.

Name the things YOU won't eat.

or anything with onions in it. My mom, as a newlywed, made beef patties with onions in them, and when he realized, refused to eat them. I don't think her feelings were hurt anyhow. He saw action in the Pacific, so she let it pass. She told me years later when I had understanding, "Daddy won't eat onions!" I don't think she ever found out the reason.

Before we went to the show we stopped at a relatives house of one of our bunch. She served us a fresh caught seafood (all kinds) casserole. Not liking fish or seafood to begin with I looked at it and dug in. It ruined my night because even after drinking a few all I could taste was fish, nasty nasty fish. I couldn't tell you about the show because I was in the bathroom most of the night. The next day I tasted fish.

The Claim: Mayonnaise Can Increase Risk of Food Poisoning

By ANAHAD O’CONNOR
JULY 1, 2008

This is the time of year when food poisoning typically spikes, and one popular picnic ingredient that always attracts suspicion is mayonnaise.

But studies cast doubt on that.

Most commercial brands of mayonnaise contain vinegar and other ingredients that make them acidic — and therefore very likely to protect against spoilage. When problems occur, they usually result from other contaminated or low-acid ingredients (like chicken and seafood), improper storage and handling, or homemade versions that contain unpasteurized eggs.

One prominent study published in The Journal of Food Protection found, for example, that in the presence of commercial mayonnaise, the growth of salmonella and staphylococcus bacteria in contaminated chicken and ham salad either slowed or stopped altogether. As the amount of mayonnaise increased, the rate of growth decreased. When temperatures rose to those of a hot summer day, the growth increased, but not as much as in samples that did not contain mayonnaise.

...

Google turns up a number of pieces in The Journal of Food Protection about mayonnaise. Here's one from 2000 (pdf):

91. The only time I ever got food poisoning was from restaurant food.

I've been to many potlucks and picnics featuring potato salad, deviled eggs and all manner of home-cooked food that sometimes went unrefrigerated all afternoon, and never got sick even once. But a restaurant meal - I'm not sure which item in that meal was the culprit - had me calling Ralph on the big white phone for two straight days.

96. If you've ever had a case of the shits, it may have been from food poisoning

Sometimes it doesn't show up for days which makes it harder to identify the source.

At least with restaurants you have some standard of food safety. Not so much with stuff made in peoples' kitchens.

...and not all of them may manifest.

There's numerous pathogens that can cause it.

I also avoid things that I'd ever make myself, since mine would be better, and I'd just be disappointed. This includes pie.

Or really anything with coconut flakes in it or on top of it. I can’t stand that flaky texture - it’s like getting a hair in your mouth. Yuck!

Other than that, the potluck dinners I go to tend to be family matters, and I trust my family with cooking, or Hispanic/Latino affairs, which means I'm going to try everything... if there are no shrimp in the dishes.

But they can't understand why I can't. I remember Julia Child wouldn't touch it.

with either mayo or dairy, that's been out for more than an hour. Had real, honest-to-goodness food poisoning one time, from some bad ranch dressing. I prayed for death.

Can't stand their nasty little fly feet tracking thru my food.

Won't eat any cooked greens, except spinach in a casserole. No turnips, rutabagas, or radishes.

Tastes just like soap.

I recently discovered that some people have a gene that causes the "soap taste". If you don't have the gene then I guess it's delicious to you.
