22. They're Coming to Take Me Away
Sun Sep 2, 2018, 10:28 PM

Remember when you ran away
And I got on my knees
And begged you not to leave
Because I'd go beserk
Well you left me anyhow
And then the days got worse and worse
And now you see I've gone
Completely out of my mind

And they're coming to take me away ha-haaa
They're coming to take me away ho-ho hee-hee ha-haaa
To the funny farm
Where life is beautiful all the time
And I'll be happy to see those nice young men
In their clean white coats
And they're coming to take me away ha-haaa

You thought it was a joke
And so you laughed
You laughed when I said
That losing you would make me flip my lid
Right?
You know you laughed
I heard you laugh, you laughed
You laughed and laughed and then you left
But now you know I'm utterly mad

And they're coming to take me away ha-haaa
They're coming to take me away ho-ho hee-hee ha-haaa
To the happy home with trees and flowers and chirping birds
And basket weavers who sit and smile and twiddle their thumbs and toes
And they're coming to take me away ha-haaa

I cooked your food
I cleaned your house
And this is how you pay me back
For all my kind unselfish, loving deeds
Ha! Well you just wait
They'll find you yet and when they do
They'll put you in the A.S.P.C.A.
You mangy mutt

And they're coming to take me away ha-haaa
They're coming to take me away ha-haaa ho-ho hee-hee
To the funny farm where life is beautiful all the time
And I'll be happy to see those nice young men
In their clean white coats
And they're coming to take me away
To the happy home with trees and flowers and chirping birds
And basket weavers who sit and smile and twiddle their thumbs and toes
And they're coming to take me away ha-haaa!

Gene Pitney had a lot of great break up songs. Half Heaven, Half Heartache. Only Love Can Break a Heart. Town Without Pity.

Linda Ronstadt and Buddy Holly.

Both versions are excellent. Holly's is upbeat, as if he's celebrating the breakup. Ronstadt's is a lament for the lost love.

But here's my top 2, with a bullet, and nobody will ever convince me my #1 is NOT ... the greatest break-up song ever ...

1) Pictures of You - The Cure (though I prefer the more languid 7+ min album mix over this single mix ... this is the one with a vid)

I've been looking so long at these pictures of you
That I almost believe that they're real
I've been living so long with my pictures of you
That I almost believe that the pictures
Are all I can feel

Remembering you standing quiet in the rain
As I ran to your heart to be near
And we kissed as the sky fell in
Holding you close
How I always held close in your fear

Remembering you running soft through the night
You were bigger and brighter and wider than snow
We screamed at the make-believe
Screamed at the sky
And you finally found all your courage
To let it all go

Remembering you fallen into my arms
Crying for the death of your heart
You were stone white
So delicate
Lost in the cold
You were always so lost in the dark

Remembering you how you used to be
Slow-drowned
You were angels
So much more than everything
Hold for the last time then slip away quietly
Open my eyes
But I never see anything

If only I'd thought of the right words
I could have held on to your heart
If only I'd thought of the right words
I wouldn't be breaking apart
All my pictures of you

Looking so long at these pictures of you
But never held on to your heart
Looking so long for the words to be true
But always just breaking apart ...
My pictures of you

There was nothing in the world
That I ever wanted more
Than to feel you deep in my heart
There was nothing in the world
That I ever wanted more
Than to never feel the breaking apart
All my pictures of you

2) Lover, You Should've Come Over - Jeff Buckley

But ... a close #2, this one comes with a warning ... you may want to have a set of fresh undies handy if you're gonna watch this one ... But seriously ... you should REALLY REALLY REALLY watch this ... it's jaw-droppingly brilliant. Watch and tell me I'm wrong ... I dare you ...

Looking out the door
I see the rain fall upon the funeral mourners
Parading in a wake of sad relations
As their shoes fill up with water

Maybe I'm too young
To keep good love from going wrong
But tonight you're on my mind so
You never know ...

Broken down and hungry for your love
With no way to feed it
Where are you tonight?
Child, you know how much I need it.

Too young to hold on
And too old to just break free and run

Sometimes a man gets carried away,
He feels like he should be having his fun
Much too blind to see the damage he's done
Well, sometimes a man must awake to find that
Really
He has no one ...

So I wait for you and I burn
Will I ever see your sweet return?
Oh, will I ever learn?

Lover, you should've come over
'Cause it's not too late.

Lonely is the room the bed is made
The open window lets the rain in
But lying in the corner is the only one
Who dreams he had you with him

My body turns and yearns for a sleep
That won't ever come

(possibly the greatest verse in all of rock and roll - Mr L)
It's never over
My kingdom for her kiss upon my shoulder
It's never over
All my riches for her smiles when I slept so soft against her
It's never over
All my blood for the sweetness of her laughter
It's never over
She's the tear that hangs inside my soul forever ...

Oh but maybe I'm just too young,
To keep good love from going wrong

Oh lover, you should've come over, yeah yeah yes

I feel too young to hold on
I'm much too old to break free and run
Too deaf, dumb, and blind
To see the damage I've done
Sweet lover, you should've come over

Oh but I waited for you ...

Lover, you should've come over
'Cause it's not too late
