So... What's with the fad of cable talking heads starting every sentence with "So... "?

So... it's been going on for most of this year. Yakker host asks a question and yakker guest starts the answer with, "So... " .

It seems to have dropped off recently SO it might have peaked.

My 22-year old son and his friends often start a sentence with the word, "So,..."

The first few times I heard it, I'd ask, "So, what?"

My kid wasn't as amused as I was.

That's when you end a declarative sentence with an "up" tone, like you would a question. It's sort of a variant of "Valley Girl" talk.

"So, I went to the store today? And I tried to cash a check? And the clerk told me they didn't take checks, but I could use a credit card?"

It's like nails on a chalkboard after the first time you hear it.

Eliminating these bad habits from your speech makes you a more effective speaker.

These are the things they bust you for when you go to Toastmasters.

Moderator: "Yes, go ahead caller"

Tom: "Uh, this is Tom in New York. I'd like to ask a question."

Instead of asking a simple question, she pretty much covers what the answer would be and then she tells the guest to "talk about" it. Otherwise good show if she quits laughing so loud I miss some of the commentary.
