The sarc is scented, too. Most of my orchids are scented, like this Christieara Luang Pabrang:
Sounds like a wonderful fragrance.

(21,691 posts)Try a zygopetalum. This is Z Artur Elle.
They smell like hyacinth and lilac but better. This one has been in bloom over a month and a new spike has come up; they're very easy to grow (tolerant of temps in the mid 30s to 80-90s with cooler nights) and the non-flowering part is pretty as well.
...and you do realize I have over 275 orchids, right? And an evil plan to take over DU with orchids?
I can only imagine how beautiful your garden must look! LOL genetic mutant 800 pound man eating orchids?

(16,334 posts)and I honestly never get tired of seeing your orchid pictures.
I have a lone orchid that I got as a xmas present. I don't know what it needs or wants. Right now it's just three leaves at the bottom with a long stem growing up the stick. It had tiny purplish buds when I got it.
No instructions; no green thumb.
Any suggestions?

(21,691 posts)They like bright shade (no direct sunlight, but bright enough to read); warm temperatures (60-80+) and to be kept evenly moist at all times - not wet and not dry and crumbly, but like a sponge that's been squeezed after being soaked in water.
That "stick" is an old spike; if it's green you can leave it; if it's brown and dried up, you can cut it off.
They bloom once a year, usually in the winter.

(16,334 posts)I was able to google more information.
It seems to be in good lighting. Definitely warm enough. Still unsure about the watering but I haven't killed it yet!

(21,691 posts)I can grow "difficult" ones, like the one in the first photo and masdevallias, but am terrible with "beginner" orchids such as phalaenopsis and paphiopedilums. I know how in theory but fall short in practice!
