DU Album of the Day: "What Up Dog" Was (Not Was)

So, whaddya feel like? Pop? Blues? Ballads? Ironic? Humorous? How about Frank Sinatra, Jr.? Or a mix of just about everything you can think of? Okay, here it is on one album.

This is the sort of album that can only come out of the talents of people who don't really care whether it's commercial, but who have a great time in the studio. Fronted by vocalists Sir Harry Bowens and Sweet Pea Atkinson, the album birthed dance favorites "Walk the Dinosaur" and "Spy in the House of Love," but also ranged over a wide variety of songs, styles and personnel. Frank Sinatra, Jr. came in for a one-day take of "Wedding Vows in Vegas," and the all-time R&B hit "I Can't Turn You Loose" gets a makeover and an 80s update, and turns out to still be a delightful ride.

There are "what the hell was that" tracks like "Earth to Doris" and "Dad I'm in Jail," but there's a sweet heart in this album, too, evidenced by ballads like "Love Can Be Bad Luck" and "Shadow & Jimmy." No matter what you're in the mood for, there's probably a song on this album that will hit just the right note.
