yelled for dog to move and somebody to bring the snake stick...son grabbed the first one and dragged it out to a clear spot and the other son dispatched it with a shovel but something was still buzzing back in there! sheesh. I think we might have disrupted a private party.

Lived on the plains of WY and CO for many years. I have a jar full of rattles.......a couple were from my front porch. It is really unsettling!! You would think they would have a little respect for your dwelling, I don't go into their dens.........

I don't kill them out and about (we always did when I was a kid) but around the house and barn? nope, good bye.

I used to kill them and Black Window spiders, until one day when I was a teenager I ran into some bushes to hide and knocked a huge Black Window onto my arm. She just scurried away as I did too. Never been around an aggressive rattler, only ones who always try to get away or rattle to announce their location. So no more. They want nothing to do with humans. They're nature's rodent and pest controllers.

but yeah, always mice and rats too. black widows don't bother me at all. scorpions and rattlers can go to hell, at least in the house. I have had at least 4 rattlers in the house and my youngest was bit when he was 18 months old (in the house). I have seen aggressive snakes plenty of times and lost some animals to bites, but yes most of the time they want to get away when you spot them. too bad if they are in my house, yard, or barn area.

4. Kali - am I right in thinking you live in southern AZ

not far from Benson, right?

it's getting colder at night and the snakes want to spend the night near the warmth offered by the foundation of your home (or walls if you have something like adobe walls).

My nephew (Pomerene) always goes out around sundown to make sure there aren't any rattlers trying to get in... he and his wife both smoke so they go out at night (no inside smoking) and, since it isn't winter yet, often aren't wearing boots and jeans yet.

they may have been mating or trying to. it was kind of cool last night so you could be right about the old adobe walls retaining heat. I sit in a chair about 4 feet away from there all the time, but the cushion was damp from the small amount of rain yesterday so was at my desk instead. I go barefoot too but not too much outside after dark. LOL

On the big level I love all living things and acknowledge everybody's right to exist. On my poor level, I run from certain species, fine with me if we mutually respect our personal space. Just that you know how to kill a snake makes me want to have you near. Lots of other reasons.

lost count of how many in the yard, but never two at the same time/location. I don't transport - A) it is really dangerous and B) my experience relocating things is either they come back or they die in the new location. people trapping and releasing mice drive me up the wall, just fooling themselves.

Be careful!

We have no poisonous snakes this side of the Cascades. In fact, I haven't seen a snake of any kind in years.

I live in New Hampshire, where rattlers do exist but are rarely seen. The scariest bug I've seen here was a big spider. There are places I'd love to visit, but the idea of snakes and poisonous insects scares the crap out of me!
