The DU Lounge
Related: Culture Forums, Support ForumsA year after his death, video for Tom Petty's "Gainesville" is released.
A nice tribute by the singer to his hometown.
If you've ever been to Gainesville, you'll see references to Petty everywhere. Multiple murals, signs, artwork, craft beers, etc.
They're holding a birthday tribute concert in his name there later this month.
They're almost as proud of Petty as they are of Gators football in Gainesville. And that's not easy to do.

I own all of the albums, including the "Playback" and "Live Anthology" box sets.
Tom's like any performer with a long and varied career. Some people will be happy with the single-CD "Greatest Hits," and for everyone else, the new box set provides greater insight for people like me, who already own it all.

(43,191 posts)Listening to Petty meshes so well with the open road. And not just "Running Down a Dream", which is literally a song about a road trip, but all of it.
I think I might invest in the box set. Petty was just so affable, just so chill, just so cool, in everything that he did. His music was the perfect antedote for this mixed up, crazy world we live in. Maybe that's why I took his passing surprisingly hard (I didn't become a fan until late in his career.)

(23,147 posts)She said he had keggers there quite often in the woods and Petty would play all night. I should have been there too, but had left for California a month before finding out I had a scholarship there that my parents kept from me. Didn't want me going to a big college & hanging out with hippies. Damn!
