The DU Lounge

Hello everyone! I'm new to DU and I am just thrilled to have found an outlet so filled with both news and creative expression from like-minded people.
I am a writer, researcher, former college professor, and student of various forms of the English language. Many moons ago I had careers in marketing and advertising. I do not maintain a social media footprint (intentionally), but I am highly skilled in performing online research.
As a matter of fact, I discovered DU as a result of a recent project that required me to wade through the muck of many (too many) conservative websites cataloging particular phrases. I was struck by the number of sites I came across that lift whole sections of DU and, instead of focusing on their own articles and stories, seem to spend an inordinate amount of energy writing often juvenile and even downright infantile replies to DU threads on their own sites. This struck me as such an "against-the-ropes" defensive posturing on their part that, of course, I had to check out what they were so scared of---and so, here I am.
Anyway, I am a long-form writer, so you are not likely to see short, quippy posts from me. However, what I can contribute are serious explorations of topics I am knowledgeable and passionate about. For example, I just spent the past two days writing a political/social satire piece that I would like to post to DU. Can anyone tell me what the best forum would be to post such a story? Also, is there a maximum word or letter count that I need to be aware of?
Thanks in advance for your response.

(149,560 posts)One thing I always do is preview my post when I have a link in it, just to make sure it actually works.
PandoraAwakened
(905 posts)Not sure what to do. When I click on the post itself, this is the post's address. Yet as you say, clicking on that as a link doesn't work. However, copying and pasting that address into my web browser does take me to the post. Now I'm confused. Not sure what to do to get a correct link?

question everything
(47,460 posts)the same stories by 10 people, that unless your post get kicked - someone adds to it, it can quickly sink to the next page and then to the archives. I thing that using this forum, or the Edioriials and Other Articles may be better. At least until youve established yourself as someone worth following.
Joining others in welcoming you to DU, and will certainly e looking forward to your insights. And, no, there is no limit on length, as you wills soon find out..
Again, welcome.

(29,699 posts)Any place but LBN is great for satirical posts. The great thing about being a democrat is that we have senses of humor. Very offbeat, sometimes whistling past the graveyard humor. Add to the mix.
Luckily, you don't have my editor who only gives me 350 words a week, there is no limit to your posts. There is the copyright rule of posting no more than 4 or 5 paragraphs of articles, and that's it.
Have fun. There are many areas to dig into. I'll look for you around the board

(46,697 posts)Good to hear from you again.
General Discussion is the place that will give you the broadest audience and one where you'll find the better political responses and opinions. In the Lounge we're a bit more casual to zany. Actually, political topics are generally frowned upon. Think more in line of the Galactic bar in Star Wars and you'll understand what goes on in the Lounge.
Look forward to reading your post.

(17,183 posts)General is the proper forum for most political writings. It is very volatile, however, so there will be a short shelf-life to anything posted there unless it goes viral.
The Lounge is for hanging out, sharing music and the arts, humor, etc.
You might also want to consider Good Reads (which is actually Editorials and Other Articles). The description implies third-party essays are to be posted there, but original essays are okay, too. If you tend to be discursive (or even prolix like me), then that forum might be appropriate. As it is less volatile than GD, your post will disappear from the front page less quickly.

The DU Lounge would not be appropriate, unless you had some non-political humor to post,
or movie, TV trivia etc.

(905 posts)Thanks for the suggestion Flaleftist. I myself don't do Twitter or Facebook, largely because of research I did a few years back that scared the bejeezus out of me, some of which is just now being made known in sporadic media accounts.
However, if anyone else wants to share my recent post on Twitter or Facebook, no problem: https://www.democraticunderground.com/100211274064
