arrgggg fucking dial-up

my phone lines are all fucked up from less than 2/10 of an inch of rain on WEDNESDAY. Called in a repair order that night but right after it started working a little lower than my usual zippy connection of 24 Kbps - around 14 or so but still there. Then yesterday mornign I could barely connect - got on once at 19 but it quit after about 5 minutes, and then all I could get were 7.2s or 4.8 and constantly disconnecting. today I am getting 4.8s for up to 20 minutes! not that I can load any pages with it but hey! once in a while I'm getting in the 7s - it took 90 minutes and I don't know how many tries to get to here.

Phone guy (who knows our situation) was out for a little while yesterday but didn't have time to walk the whole 2 miles of 70 year old line. Said he would come back out today, but no call and no show so far.

$50/month for cell phone modem, huh? I wonder how fast I would run through 5 G of data? This sucks and I bet he won't be comming back until Monday now. I need to go shopping tomorrow so will plan to hit the library for a while. need to maybe order an air card. I am sick of this shit. and I am paying around $40 already! between the land line and the ISP...

I doubt if I will be able to reply until tomorrow - that is if I can manage to get this posted sometime tonight. I will begin the process now at 5:20, but may need to take a break for chores if it doesn't work in a half hour or so.

I think snail mail would be faster, does anybody have pen pals anymore?

While I have DSL, my equipment is old. I can get 100 Mbps on the desktop, which is connected with a line. My ancient laptop is wireless, and on a good day, I can get 28 Mbps. Usually, it's more like 11. On top of the godawful slow connection, I keep getting these damn script errors, which hang it up even more. I can't figure out for the life of me what's causing them.

I think you should go for it. That would've driven me nut a long time ago. Have you looked into satellite Internet? I think Dish Network has it. Probably Direct TV, too

In theory, if you used your 5gb of cell data at a 56k dialup rate, it would take about 8-9 days of continuous use.

Sketching in the math, If you were to run it 24hrs a day maxed at 24k, that would be just shy of 6 gb per month.

Assuming that you do not spend all day downloading things, I feel safe saying you are not currently using 5 GB a month.

That said, if the new connection moves a bit quicker and more reliably, you might use it more. I generally run through more than 5 gb a month. But we watch a fair amount of video.

On the old Compuserve forums, there was this wonderful software called TapCIS. It would call in, pick up message headers and replies directly to our previous messages. Offline, we'd read the replies, write responses, mark the message headers for the ones we wanted to pick up. Then the program would call back in and post messages and pick up the messages we wanted to read.

It would take a few minutes to do the online parts and we'd spend a couple of hours reading messages and writing replies. Then it would go back online and upload the replies.

We'd go through this process once a day, maybe twice if there were hot topics.

TapCIS lasted until AOL 'upgraded' the old Compuserve servers and went totally web based. It was too bad - the software made it possible to stay on dial up access for a very long time for a lot of people.

Too bad there isn't some way to write software that would do that for the DU forums today!

Available with Dish Network TV. They seem to be able to do pretty well - tho it ain't cheap.
