My past-wife (ex) reminded me of a label she came up with for a certain type of pickup truck. She called them "Dick-Up Trucks." That is, pickups that have been bought and/or tricked out to be a status symbol, versus the standard working form most people would buy or consider. Here's an example:
Dick-Up Truck
The truck pictured above will never haul a grain of sand, much less a yard or three of manure.
This truck will:
Also, I don't care about makes, models, brands or what-have-you. This is only about use of a vehicle designed for utility. Just thought I'd clear that up

(29,414 posts)I always liked their segment on the Toyota Hilux pickup:
They do a good job trying to destroy it
Now that's a beater!

(29,414 posts)that's a kind of all around handyman. I don't recall what his truck looks like if I've ever seen it. But I have seen his old VW van, and it's definitely a beater.
The guy's a real character, and I've been told by authoritative individuals that have known him for years, that he is indeed rich. He simply doesn't flaunt it. Plus, he continues to work for his living. I think he owned a custom automotive shop at one time, rebuilding pickups for even heavier work than their original design could handle.

(20,176 posts)is that I have a side of my family filled with general-contractors and they all own/bought what we're calling "dick-up trucks" in the parlance of the day because they want a nice vehicle but one that they could use for work if they needed to haul something...then they end-up renting a work truck, hiring a hauler or owning a beater like the second truck when they actually do need to haul something:
So they don't mess up their nice truck.
I tried to tell my cousin G that if that was how he knew it was going to go anyways, he should just buy the goddamned used Porsche he actually wanted instead and cost less.
He didn't listen.
His wife was disappointed because she'd much rather have the Porsche next to the beater-truck in the driveway because she might actually want to drive the Porsche from time to time when she didn't need to be using the "family car". (They have kids, neither the trucks or a Porsche is fitting two teenage boys and two adults.)

(29,414 posts)I suspect it's the same mentality that got the marketing people at Cadillac to create that "pickup" they produced, whatever it's called. I've only ever seen those "trucks" in pristine condition, and never hauling anything but one person. That's the only brand I'll "call out" so to speak. Due to me living in Houston, I still see those particular dick-up trucks every now and then.
I don't own a pickup, but when I do, it'll be a small beater. Or, I'll just rent for my small needs
