I took the online assessment for some counseling I'm doing. You can do that for $50. The assessment and the explanation take less than an hour. I came came back INFP- Introvert, Intuitive, Feeling, Perceptive. I've always known I was an introvert, but I used to be much more of a thinker than the assessment now indicates. Not that I'm less intelligent now- being more absorbed with linear thought doesn't necessarily make one more intelligent. I had one of those really big and serious life changing events happen to me about a year ago and it has caused me to develop an area a Jungian analyst might call an inferior function. I'm much more in tune with my intuition and feeling now. I can still think logically, even philosophically, but it's just not my natural mode being anymore.

(10,252 posts)The 9 Personality types proposed by Gurdjieff and adopted by Arica Institute and the Eneagram folks is what I started learning first. Parts of it map with Myers-Briggs.
Tibetan Buddhism has 5 personality types. Its the system that I work with now.

(10,252 posts)The whole point of any personalty system is to recognize our unconscious habitual thoughts and behaviors. By bringing mindfulness and discriminating awareness to our way of being, we can work with the energy that resonates with a personality type and transform it from a harmful negative emotion to an energy that is beneficial.

I took this at work. I was a computer systems programmer. Other than the I(introvert) I was the opposite of all 11 other systems programmers.

(34,390 posts)I tested as such in my youth, and it continues to be my predominant MBTI classification.
Though Nardi says it isn't possible, even his own test sometimes hasn't been able to figure me out. I've mostly been FiNe, but NiFe (INFJ) is the result on about a third of my administrations, and I've had the occasional NeFi (ENFP) as well.
It definitely makes matters interesting. FWIW, I'm an Enneagram 4 (balanced wings), 469 tritype. That could be a whole other thread, though; hopefully, I don't sidetrack this one!

(779 posts)I took it twice when I was younger, a few years apart, and came up INTP both times. The last time was probably over 10 years ago, so I wonder if it would be the same now? I can see how it might change with life experience.

(20,190 posts)It varies depending on the test. It's been 30 years since I took the full blown test, but the different online versions consistently come up with these 2 types. I originally trained as a science teacher and I remember when I took the test in grad school, in an educational psychology course, the instructor said NFs made great teachers because they care about their students, but they are also the most likely to get burned out for the same reason. Sure enough, I only lasted 9 years.

(41,132 posts)The 16 types are typically referred to by an abbreviation of four lettersthe initial letters of each of their four type preferences (*except in the case of intuition, which uses the abbreviation "N" to distinguish it from introversion).
For instance:
ESTJ: extraversion (E), sensing (S), thinking (T), judgment (J)
INFP: introversion (I), intuition (N), feeling (F), perception (P)
These abbreviations are applied to all 16 types.
