How much they understand about children. Not always, but often enough.

I have a cat who pawed a 5-year old on her face. Left a slight scratch. We were all appalled and kept the cat from the kid for a long time. Many years later, the kid told us she was pestering the kitty to see how long it would take to get her to stand up for herself. All those years my sweet little kitty took the rap!

Nevermind the cat probably weighs at least half of what the kid does.

My sister's cat is extremely tolerant of kids-- her own (4, 6) and her niece (1). It was fun at Thanksgiving watching the baby and cat interact.
