The DU Lounge
Related: Culture Forums, Support ForumsHello everyone!
I am Bilegurken (this name comes from my internet gaming days, basically a pickle(mispelled 'gerkin') in bile. I wanted something original that no one would take)
Don't know the standard process of intro here. So here goes:
I am a high school teacher (social studies)
I have a degree in political science with a focus on constitutional law
I am a progressive, but not a BoB. Martyrdom is unappealing to me.
Feel free to ask me anymore questions.

(27,494 posts)I'd like to think we're a pretty diverse bunch with many different backgrounds. We do on occasion get into tiffs and disagreements. When the temperature gets too hot, pay a visit to the Lounge. Also try many of the other discussion groups listed on the left hand side.
Hope you're here for many years, enjoy the dialogue and contribute to the discussions.

(18,464 posts)Up in these here parts in central Maine, B & B denotes Bed & Breakfast. We done got lots of tourists up here in season, we are service industry orientated - with hotels, restaurants, and resort area prevail during summer season. That is major bread and butter for our economy up here. Clam bakes, lobsta, LLBeans and rocky ocean coast line are all standard fare.
Welcome aboard the Democratic Underground freedom train,.. an eclectic mix of people and opinions are to be found here.
You should blend into the crowd nicely.

Just a heads up that there are various long-standing feuds and disagreements, and eventually you'll figure out some of them. But this is usually a pretty lively place, so I hope you fit in.
I will add that despite my screen name, I'm a woman.

So welcome and Happy New Year!

(14,770 posts)Looking at tRump is like chewing a bile gherkin and listening to that voice is like chalk squawking on a chalkboard.....
Daughter is a fifth-grade reading teacher and wife (retired) was a teacher's assistant for many years. It's a struggle for teachers here in KY due to republican budget cuts and my daughter has had to go to DonorsChoose.org just to get enough books and computers for her class. We hope you're not going through that struggle!
How long have you been teaching?
We've had some serious discussions here on DU about the loss of education in far too many citizens in the areas of US government and history, political science and social studies. It would be interesting if you could share how well your students are taking to social studies these days.
We do try to not be too detailed or lengthy with our messages here and try hard to not take anything too seriously. However, feel free to let loose with a good hearty rant on occasion when you need to!
