Don't get me wrong - we have three cats and love them very much. The oldest is 17 and the two youngest came from the same letter and are 6 years old.
Now, cats are really cool little animals. They are cute, fun and generally playful. My 17 year old will come and curl up on the desk beside me in my home office while I'm working. I love that cat. He's my cuddle-cat.
So, anyway, we have two large litter boxes and they are near my desk in my home office. Needless to say I clean as they go. Seriously, no one wants to be focusing on a spreadsheet surrounded by cat poop smell. So after the little guys go, I'm right there scooping it out.
Well, they've gotten spoiled. This morning, I didn't scoop the boxes out first thing.
Nope, I exercised, then sat down for a news review as I always do.
Well, I guess the male (neutered) six-year old didn't appreciate that. So this morning he goes into the box, poops and then proceeds to bury it VERY vigorously, which means he spewed litter all over the floor outside the boxes.
This is why I've given him the middle initial 'F.' I'll let you all surmise what that might stand for. First name starts with A. So A. F. Cat. Yep. That's his name...

(5,067 posts)I would be just grateful he used the pan. If you have cats that will not use the
pan at all, then you have a real problem.

(10,866 posts)It belongs to our daughter, and is a breed she chose. (Ragdoll) Very pretty, but the dumbest creature to ever walk this earth. Will lay the stinkiest turds then step out of the box and scratch the floor. Every. Single. Time.
I truly prefer my GSD, and she prefers me.

(2,815 posts)would claw at the top edge of the litter pan and wouldn't stop until we yelled at her. She could never figure out why she couldn't bury her droppings.

(26,259 posts)I received numerous nose bops and loud complaints that I was far behind in my scritching duties.
Finally I lifted up the corner of the duvet and she crawled under, curled up, and purred for half an hour.

(2,768 posts)In addition she's added little special rules to the routine. These following are her basic tenants of litter box use. All of these rules are tentative and prone to change on a whim.
General
1) Only one poop per box.
2) Pee can only done at the very VERY front of the litter box.
3) Litter must be 4+ inches deep in each box.
4) Cleaning must happen multiple times daily
5) Failure to follow rules result in pee in the tub, dust pan used to
sweep litter, litter mats(back when I was stupid enough to use
actual litter mats), bedroom corner, kitchen floor, any plants with
pots big enough to get in (which means zero at the moment because they have all died from excessive cat piss)
Box Specific
1)Box c can be used for poop but only directly after a complete
cleaning and before cat 2 uses it.
2) Box b will never be used but the psyche out faux litter mat(i.e. foil
pan filled with litter covered by folded paper towels) is a cat 1
approved piss spot.
3) Box d can be used for exactly 1 poo and 1 pee before being
abandoned.
4) Box a(the favorite) can be used for 2 poops (exactly) and the faux
litter mat(another large foil pan filled with litter and covered with
paper towels can be used for multiple pee's but only until the paper
is too wet for her liking(2-3 pees)
5) All rules are rendered null and void once cat #2 makes one pee or poop in said box. Once this happens the pissageddon protocol is
triggered. Once that happens it's every man, cat, whatever for themselves.

(20,576 posts)happened with my cat too. She was the only one using it so she didn't have as many rules but it seems aging kicks in some weird litter box behavior. Of course I obeyed and did as she required.

It came from left field with a vengeance. Originally we had one of those giant sterlite storage tubs the two cats shared. It held 32 or so pounds of litter at any given time and was cleaned daily. A year or so ago a plant I'd been growing for 12 years started losing tons of leaves. Some of the smaller branches drooped and fell off. I thought it was over watering or something, so I cut back, but would often find the soil damp upon the next watering.
At that point the soil didn't smell and the plant kept growing fairly normally. I rooted and replanted the fallen branches and kept watering the original plant normally. Well, one day I went to water and the dirt smelled faintly like cat pee. I had dealt with this before and figured I'd probably have to replace a few pounds of dirt and cover it in foil, no biggie. That was the working theory except kept digging and digging and digging and, well, you get the idea. It turned out when I watered the plant it was diluting the cat pee just enough to not stink. Additionally of the fun stuff that makes cat pee so awful was washed to the bottom of the pot beneath 2 feet of dirt where the ammonia smell was being hidden
I saved what few branches remained and chucked the pot, dirt and what was left of the original plant. From there began the year of litter box wack a mole. Tried more boxes, different litters, different boxes, vet visits, more boxes, theories, paw injuries, more vet visits, theories, even more boxes, lots of carpet scrubbing and even more not so nice names for the cat.
It took almost a year to put together the right combination of solutions to reach a stalemate with this cat. The final solution is something I like to call "litterception". A cat bo foil pan) in front of the cat box that the cat doesn't know is a cat box because the litter is covered with paper. She thinks she's peeing on a flat surface when its really another litter pan in disguise!!!!!
Yea, so now I get to feel smart about how my solution is working. Then I realize that stupid cat now has 4 litter boxes and 3 litter pans she can pick and choose from at her leisure and I STILL need to make sure they are all immaculate all the time. Of course, now I get to tell this story to folks and say LITTERCEPTION!!!!!!

(20,576 posts)I took in a cat for the winter because the neighbors said she peed on the bed so they kept her outside. Couldn't stand to see her hiding from downpours etc. She has my spare bedroom and has not peed on that bed but I accidently left the door open to my room and she did it. I can't figure out her thinking on this.
I have to keep her litter box cleaned throughout the day and do not trust her anywhere but her own room or outside. In the Vancouver Vet videos he said there have only been a couple cats who can't be cured of this but I'll be darned if I can figure it out. He kept a cat like that and gave the cat his very own towel. The cat uses it to pee on and the staff just washes his towel.
I guess I'll give Bobo one more litter box and that's it!
Do you ever think maybe they are laughing at us behind our backs?
Afromania
(2,768 posts)a bit better than we do. We don't exactly trust Brown Cat (one of her nicknames) either. Furniture has been rearranged to make sure we don't have the types of corners she likes and the water/feeding station has been relocated to the area next to the minifridge she liked to pee next to. I don't know if they are laughing so much as being enthused about being able to dictate as much of their living condition to their "captives" as they can without being thrown into the street.
