Had a fast talking sales guy ring the doorbell a couple of months ago. I'd just ditched COX's cable service for YT TV but I still have their internet. The guy was telling me that 100Mbit service would be $50 per month plus taxes,I'm paying $84 to COX for 100 and not getting 100. He told me it would be a dedicated line and the speed wouldn't drop with traffic like HSI through cable, although that's never happened that much where I live.
Question too,can you use your cable modem or do they provide equipment?? Do they need to run a line,it can't be coming through the twisted phone wire--or can it??
Thanks!

(22,026 posts)We have a house in the Catskills and it's pretty rural. There isn't any cell service so we have a landline for security. Verizon provides the service and they also supply us with internet which allows us to use our iPhones' "WiFi Calling" feature.
Verizon provided the router and the tech who came to install it was friendly, professional and had a great sense of humor about technology in the mountains. He did not have to install any new wiring as the router plugs into one of the standard phone wall jacks. Our monthly bill is about $65.00. I'm not certain about the speed but I can assuredly say that it's faster and more reliable than the service we get on the Upper East Side of Manhattan.
Incidentally, we do not have cable TV service although Verizon offered it to us at additional costs.
Good luck!

(5,165 posts)Line, but you really have to insist to get it. A friend of mine went through that with AT&T.
I have internet only and took a deal offered last year for a year contract at 40 flat a month.
I am receiving notices the price is now going up to 50, but will know for sure with next bill.

(1,592 posts)2012-14 I worked out of state and kept a little studio apartment during the week, had AT&T for internet only. I can't remember the speed but I paid I think $25 a month. Speed was plenty for Netflix.

(31,382 posts)The speed DOES drop with traffic when downloading. Don't buy the BS. My update manager shows the speed of downloading for various updates and believe me it fluctuates a lot on occasion.

(27,792 posts)We pay about $44/month

(7,517 posts)First, the $50 a month is probably a teaser rate for the first year. Ask how much it is after that.
Second, AT&T in most areas has a 1000 TB data cap, after which you get charged for excess data use. YouTube TV says they require a minimum of 7 mbps, so that works out to a little over 10 hours of TV per day to go over your cap. If you live alone, you probably don't have to worry. If you have a family of four or five, then it's possible you might approach that cap.
Third, I don't believe AT&T uses cable. I'm pretty sure their slower tiers are DSL and their faster tiers are fiber-optic. I do not know where one ends and the other begins.

(6,931 posts)Talk about shady shit, you can NEVER get a real price from them on-line,just BS "come on's" to sucker people into ordering at low prices just to watch them be JACKED in six months.
Data caps.....yeah,COX started that "feature" around here a couple of years ago. Same 1TB per month limit and then they nail you. I have YT TV,if I ran it at 1080 res all the time we'd go over,I have to dial it back to 780 but it still looks good.
At&T has fiber to the box on the main arterial about 500 feet from my house and then I guess twisted wire, not sure if they ran anything else to the box that's in my backyard. Years ago my girlfriend had U-Verse and it worked with twisted wire,I couldn't believe it.

(38,309 posts)Essentially I'm paying someone else to deal with AT&T's bullshit.
Our connection is a twisted wire pair to the big AT&T box down the street. When we first moved here it was Pacific Bell and they didn't offer residential internet service. The box down the street has been upgraded several times since we've lived here.
Our connection speed is rock solid. Standard definition Netflix and YouTube videos play without any problem.
Netflix is our only subscription video service.
There's no way in hell I'll ever do business with Comcast. I don't know and don't care if the Comcast cable connected to our house is even functional. Comcast sends me more junk mail than anyone else, a lot of it that plastic coated crap which denies me the pleasure of ripping it in half before I drop it in recycling bin.

Land line telephone, broadband, NetFlix, and the newest device.....Roku! My son visited this weekend and hooked me up with it and and I have yet discovered all the cool stuff on it!
AT&T hooked me up with a strong router that services everything, plus a brick battery block that keeps the system operating during a power outage (TV and table top computer won't work, but the laptop and smartphone keeps on humming). HD Smart TV, three computers, telephone, and smartphone all work flawlessly at the same time.

Your Internet speed is fast
Your Internet connection should be able to handle multiple devices streaming HD videos at the same time.

(38,309 posts)... the Pacific Bell copper wires in our neighborhood maxed out at 28.8k when we first moved into this house.
When I first started connecting my computers to the outside world I had a 300 Baud modem. The university I had an account with had an internet connection equivalent to a 56k modem which everyone shared.
Our kids have moved away to big cities and have optical fiber straight into their homes that's crazy fast.
People I've talked with, and a few people here on DU, have noted AT&T really does a hard sell on their television services and doesn't seem interested in internet only service.
My own internet service is month to month and both the modem and UPS are mine.

(36,412 posts)Just a bare bones telephone and broadband service. Our copper wires go straight to the AT&T building, a whopping one block away, where I assume it is converted to optic cables. My system is plenty fast for my needs and I don't experience buffeting problems like I did a few short years ago.
My big beef with AT&T is they stopped supporting my rotary (analog) telephone service. My period piece rotary telephone receives calls but I can't dial out; the phone dude had to dedicate one of the four copper wires to send in some real juice to make the bell ring when they converted to digital service.

(4,603 posts)We got super screwed by a Comcast door to door guy. He signed us up for all sorts of stuff we didn't agree to and it took several months to untangle. Our monthly bill was supposed to be around $60, including taxes, and it turned out to be around $140. In the end, we ended up paying several hundred dollars more than we should have just to make them go away.
If you do decide to get the service, call the 800 number- the calls are recorded and firm proof of what you actually agreed to. Those door to door guys are shady.

(6,931 posts)Told him I'd look at it on-line and maybe give them a call.
