A high school classmate of my son's took her mother's brand new Mercedes out for a drive. When she gassed up, she used diesel fuel and destroyed the engine. I think it was close to $10K to replace.

I thought the nozzles were supposed to be sized to prevent such an accident. My son described his classmate as "not too bright."

Mercedes has sold diesel versions of their cars for a long time. The diesel nozzles won't go into a normal (unleaded-only) tank, but an unleaded nozzle will go into a diesel tank, and it's just as bad to put gasoline in the diesel (in some ways worse in fact) than doing it the other way around.

It was a number of years ago and my memory ain't what it used to be!

Still, mixing up the two fuels is a pretty bad mistake.

We ran out of gas only a half mile from home. He said, "We've got cans of gas at the farm. I'll walk down and grab one!" I was dubious about it, since the only cans I knew about were full of diesel for the tractor but he said there were a couple of gas cans for the chain saw.

He brought back a five gallon can and dumped it into the truck. It turned over - once - then spewed out a bunch of black smoke and quit. We had to get the horse trailer towed back to the farm, then the truck towed to the shop. Then the engine was basically rebuilt.

I made stencils and stenciled "DIESEL" in BIG letters all over the diesel cans after that!

Thank you so much for providing it by way of these videos. I had never seen either one of them, and my sides hurt from laughing so hard.

He should have asked for the car fax -- or would they have been called car teletypes back then?
