Wow another musical legend has passed away with Robin Gibbs of the Bee Gees passing away to cancer. Although the Bee Gees had a pretty decent history of great music it wasn't until the release of the soundtrack from "Saturday Night Fever" (SNF) that the Bee Gees exploded on the pop music charts. Based on one of the massive movie releases of 1976, "Saturday Night Fever" was the story of a working class kid from an Italian family struggling to find his place in society while being the champion of the local discoteque "Odessy 2001". Although the soundtrack from the movie featured many of the top artists of the day the primary sounds of SNF came from the Bee Gees which included such massive hits as "Night Fever", "Staying Alive", "More than a Woman" and "How Deep is your Love". To date the album as sold over 15million copies (15x platinum) and is considered one of the best soundtracks ever. Not only did it when Album of the Year Grammy but Rolling Stone Magazine lists it as the 131st best album of all time (out of their top 500 list).

(82,849 posts)But this album is indeed one of those archetypical albums. If you were collecting records in the 1970s (what a quaint-sounding thing to type), this had to be one of them. Contrarian that I am, of course, I didn't personally have it, but practically every one of my friends did.
My best friend in high school was the student body president, and for reasons known only to some obscure administrator, that qualified him to be one of the judges for the school's dance team. He had to sit through 40 separate auditions for the 16 places on the team. The song for which all 40 of them did the same routine was "Jive Talkin'," which my friend hated with the white hot hatred of a thousand nuns. By the time the auditions were over, he was ready to commit a particularly heinous and gruesome murder. Luckily, I was able to talk him down.

(19,370 posts)Never was a fan of "disco" music, although in my old age I do find I can listen to it with a little more tolerence. However, the Bee Gees were among the top of the genre.
RIP Robin, gone too soon.
