(13,421 posts)What REALLY pisses me off about them is without fail, you get that screen AFTER you have waded through a kerjillion other screens wanting to know almost everything except what hand you use to wipe. You don't WANT to have to re-enter all that crap, so you feel obligated to try in spite of how stoopid it is.
Oh--have you EVER tried the sound version of those things? That is really F***ed up too!!

(78,249 posts)There are at least two less intrusive ways to fight spam:
1) The math problem. A simple math problem is displayed; you type the answer in the form. This should work well unless you're Sarah Palin.
2) The "honeypot" approach. Some geekery is in order here: A spambot is programmed to fill in any form it sees. So, you simply place a form somewhere where it will never show up onscreen. If it comes back filled in, the spambot is busted.

Either through automated means, or by sending a copy of the image to China, where people will enter captchas for you for a very, very small amount of money.
