Vinyl sucks. I remember the last album I bought. I had a fine system and the damned thing starting crackling within days. Soundtrack to Local Hero. The record companies had gotten so cheap that most albums came prewarped.

Another 50 years and ears will adapt to no longer love the restrictions of a lost medium.

Tape sucks too.

Which probably means there's a good reason for it.

(But in rather small circles) Mikal Rouse. And I hoped people would scroll through the article and listen to his music.

If you have the ime, you can listen to one of his pieces right on "The Awl"

The URL is in the OP.

You might be happy to make an acquanitance with the guy.

And I cannot say that I have any inclination to argue with you about the pop hiss stuff.

it gives me warm fuzzies.

Way back when I would record vinyl onto CDR I always left in the needle drop and never ran the wav files through a de-hisser. I just adjusted the levels to create the best sound I could and let it ride.

I did have to redo 2112 though - I accidentally left the mic input on and you could hear me hollering at the dog in the background.

But I ain't mad at folks what do different. Music is for enjoying - I don't get or want to tell anyone how to enjoy. Most of my stuff is digital now anyway - I haven't bought a vinyl record in maybe 15~20 years - but I like when I do hear it. And I am not getting rid of the couple crates full of records I have now.

.. I also really like the pop and hiss and as you said - you just let it ride. I so like & appreciate that!

It is kind of like...real...live...(honesty...really) warts and all. No biggie at all....really.

(Not getting rid of my crates of LPs anytime soon either!)

Sometimes (most recently) imo - music has become like....TOO CLEAN & SLICK - ya follow? Just a little too off the radar of what makes music really compelling and interesting to even BEGIN WITH...the fact that it speaks directly to our souls.

Thank goodness for youtube (and let's keep fighting on keeping it open ya'll!!!) and for all of the wonderful younger generation(s) now emerging and appreciating this stuff and want to take it to the next level...case in point: Jem Griffiths. IMO, she is taking the ball and really fricking running with it as so are many other *international* artists...and isn't that the thing...really? This (now) all of a sudden *younger generation* is FINALLY figuring out..............

Common denominator. Right. Ya follow? Don't know about you, but it does give me hope in the future, all the same..........

yes and yes to all of that yes. I think that is why I am drawn to live music too. It's realer.

And old timey blues - Sound like they were recorded by dragging a bayonet across a revolving tin can and I love love love it.

Going further is like colorizing old black and white movies. Why would you do that? The original artists made the movie for black and white film. Let it be.

Just got a new job, a stack of 45's.

It's fun listening to a CD that still sounds like a record and a needle.

of music, nothing beats an LP. The information density will always be higher on an LP than with any other medium. You can get a record cleaning machine for as little as 50 bucks and it will remove tons of crudniks, hiss and pops from vinyl. I have 4000+ records and will keep adding more until they put the toe tag on me. ETA - the vinyl being pressed today, particularly reissues, are the best records that have ever been made: 180 gram records, ghostly silent and incredibly musical.

This is my long-time LP-spinning baby:

SOTA Cosmos III (mine has a Graham 2.2 arm and a Dynavector XV-1S cartridge)

I am supposed to be reviewing this turntable for the website to which I contribute over the summer. Ladeeez and gennulmen, the Kronos Audio Turntable:

(Graham Phantom arm - newer than my 2.2, and the same Dynavector cartridge)
