Do you remember the first time you smoked rubber?

I have only driven cars with weak engines than can't pull the skin off a pudding, so I had to resort to test drives at the dealership. Always a let down when the salesman insists on coming with you.

dried bit of rubber band from between the couch cushions. I've probably burned a bit in my younger days.

I was sixteen. My ex-brother was giving me a driving lesson in his Jeep CJ-5. His words just prior to me letting off the clutch were, "whatever you do, don't peel out."

My first car was a '68 Firebird, which was eventually replaced by a '66 Chevelle 396 SS.

Jan. 26, 1986. Bears win Superbowl. On a Colorado highway, a large deer leapt into my lane and stood there like a deer in the headlights. I missed him, but hit a lot of gravel at the center line, then went airborne... sideways. My door came open and caught a tree. I was at 45 degrees nose up, and surprised to be alive.

Next car... a '71 Beetle.

60 whole horsepower from a 71 Beetle! You weren't burning any rubber.

I have to say, though, I wouldn't mind owning a Beetle. They are kind of funky and super easy to work on.
