The DU Lounge
Related: Culture Forums, Support ForumsWe need another term besides "Neanderthal" to apply to people who are brutish, coarse, or otherwise
uncouth.
As I've pointed out on DU before, that is an insult to the Neanderthals, who were actually quite progressive, taking care of the weaker members of their tribes.
Any ideas?

(5,170 posts)Either way, I'm not sure that's where boorish originates. Miriam Webster says them term originates from 1562, well before the Dutch colonized South Africa.

(9,999 posts)I was actually starting to fall into a deep deep depression remembering his 8 years at the helm. Just before I was ready to do something really drastic, I looked up and saw Joe Biden smiling at me. Suddenly, I was snapped back into the present, and all was right with the world. Just looking at the contrast between those 2 men makes me laugh my ass off. Thanks for both..

(1,846 posts)The term australopithecine refers generally to any species in the related genera Australopithecus or Paranthropus. These species occurred in the Plio-Pleistocene era, and were bipedal and dentally similar to humans, but with a brain size not much larger than modern apes, lacking the encephalization characteristics of the genus Homo.[1]

(54,330 posts)The Neander stream flows just a few Km south of where we live, and the word "Tal (older spelling: Thal)" means "valley."
The first fossils were found at a cave site in the Neander Valley, i.e. in German "Neandertal." There is a "Top 40" style
radio station there called "Radio Neandertal," and there is a really well-done museum on the site.

(65,616 posts)You want to describe an uncouth person? I think you just found your word. I don't use neanderthal, because it is not fair. Why not just call them homo erectus? Or australopithecus? Cro-magnon man?
Uncouth. Good word.
