The DU Lounge
Related: Culture Forums, Support ForumsI did something today, I only did once before ....
...My first time, was about a week ago. Strange, but not quirky, mean, crude, sexual, ridiculous, unfair, hurting, bizarre, hard to imagine, totally off the wall, something no one has ever done, something that someone here hasn't done, something to be ridiculed or made fun of..or.........whatever????....enough...
...I looked through a pile of several hundred pennies looking for pennies that were made before 1959. I don't know where these hundreds of pennies came from...kinda get them and put them in a large cup. But for some reason, (I don't know why?) I started looking for those without the Lincoln Memorial on the back..those before 1959..About a week ago, I got into this, and looked through another stack or pile of pennies. Why? I don't know why?.. Probably because I date back before 1959, and I think I remember the new pennies coming out in 1959........
..Hell.. what is a penny all about?..I did find one Canadian penny in the pile. But so far out of hundreds of pennies that I have looked at I got two before 1959. This is what happens sometime, when you retire and start cleaning out the stuff that maybe you need or don't need..like a pile of old pennies..(some not so old)
..Hey...would anyone like some old lesson plans from the 70s..got lots of them....thanks for reading this..

(14,118 posts)some years ago I returned from a trip to Canada with quite a few Canadian quarters. What to do?
I found that US vending machines accepted the Canadian quarters just fine... Then a few years ago
I found a Canadian dollar coin on the ground in a WalMart parking lot here in New Mexico. The
dollar coin was worn and it could only be identified by looking at it in sunlight but there it is, sitting on my bedroom dresser. Do you wanna buy my penny collection? I'll throw in the 20 cent Ireland Euro
coin I keep with them... (wish I knew where I got THAT!)

(86,565 posts)and about once a year I empty it out and look through all the pennies before I cash it in at the bank. I have about 200 "wheatback" pennies and about four steel pennies and one Indian Head from 1901. But I've been looking at pennies for decades. Working at a cash register can reap rewards in strange/odd coins.

(3,577 posts)Your post sent me to Wikipedia, where there is a long article about the Lincoln penny. The first one, that you like, was issued in 1909. The 1959 version has a beautiful rendering of the Lincoln Memorial. Then in 2009 for his bicentennial there were four different coins with views representing Lincoln as a child, young man, practicing lawyer, and president (I've never seen one of them or knew they existed!). In 2010 the current coin was issued with the shield. I miss the authentic Lincoln Memorial.

(38,419 posts)...The one with a shield ...well it "sucks". : Now, I have done some research on this, and I found out that the one with a shield is worth a ..."penny" and the one with "The Lincoln Memorial " is also worth..........................................................................................................................................
"a penny"......and.....(very important)...................................................................................
...I also found out that each of these coins, the ugly one with the shield, and the beautiful one with the
"Lincoln Memorial"....are only worth...a penny..Additional research confirmed that there was a time when a penny would buy something, like a gumball, or a tiny piece of candy, but in today's world, a penny will buy very little. They are in reality....just a penny...I will pledge to the flag on that

(51,445 posts)Around 260 wheat pennies. I also found 14 steel pennies from WWII. My BIL had dumped change into containers for 50 years or more. I went through it all and added around $850 to my bank account.

(82,849 posts)It's a little weird seeing Edward VI instead of Elizabeth II. After I'm gone, those Elizabeth II pennies will start being scarcer and scarcer.

(7,809 posts)Would you like to give me a hand in sorting them out?
When I was a bank teller, people would sometimes ask me if I had any silver coins. Ha! Dream on, buster.
