I have a difficult situation on my hands and Id like some input.
I picked up a stray cat yesterday. I thought hed been hit by a car. At the emergency vet, I learned he had not been hit by a car but had a massive infection in his leg. Hes been started on antibiotics, but the doctor was of the opinion he will probably need to have the leg amputated. I took him home and installed him in a bathroom. This morning hes eating, hes complaining, and he had a seizure.
While Im waiting for my regular vet to get in, Im considering whether the kindest thing to do with this fellow is to euthanize him. Hes not an old cat and does not appear to be feral, but his health problems just look so insurmountable.

(18,639 posts)Consult with your regular vet first. You, he and kitty will let you know.
This is heart-wrenching. I'm so sorry.
You are tops in my book for caring.

(11,885 posts)We just took in a little very young kitten that just had a litter already outside, and took her in to get fixed and a complete looking at , with all her shots , and thankfully she doesn't have problems , and is as sweet as can be now. I think everyone needs to make their own decisions based on what they can afford , and to commit to with spending. That's how we did, and decided if it was too much for us we would have no choice and would have to find her another home. Its a very , very hard choice to make , and I'm sure you'll do what's right for the cat, and for you. Another looking at by your regular vet would be a good start , and hear what they think should be done. Sorry you have to face this hard decision. Hope this helps.

(7,142 posts)fine, but your cat may have other issues.
I have 2 stray cats that stay in my garage in heated cat houses in the winter. I got them to the vet to be fixed and get their shots. One cat has feline leukemia the other doesn't. The vet asked me if I wanted to euthanize the one cat. I decided that since the 2 cats get along, don't fight, where blood can be transferred, I took the chance that the one cat won't give the other cat feline leukemia. Lucky so far, they have lived together for 3 years. My healthy cat just got in a fight with a big raccoon who chewed up my cats tail. I got him to the vet and fixed up. The vet called me and asked why all the blood on my cat's chest since he can't find a wound. I told him that it was probably raccoon blood. My cat is gentle but a tough sob.

(9,291 posts)I would consult with the vet. The seizure could have be from several issues. If it's not a cancer, then can be easily treated with meds and I don't believe it's expensive. Check fosters and smith pharmacy online for cost. If that you think you can handle, then removing the leg isn't a huge issue for a cat. They will figure it out and live a normal life.
Let us know how it goes. I also found two hurt cats in my lifetime, once still lives with me but the other a young kitten was thrown out of a car, but took her to the vet and it wasn't good. We at least tried.

(15,088 posts)At this point, my concerns arent with cost, but with putting this cat through a lot of unnecessary misery. Also, I have seven other cats in the house freaking out because of the tomcat in the bathroom.

(9,291 posts)Well good luck to you and the tomcat. Cats always adapt but like teenaged humans, drama must be involved. Let us know.

(15,805 posts)If you don't see improvement call your vet and see if another med might be more effective. Seizures can result from fever, so unless this becomes more frequent just be vigilant and let your vet know.
Even if the leg needs to go, cats are so agile and resilient she will adjust very quickly. The kitty won't miss the leg, their brains just don't work like that. She will have an amazing and happy life with three legs.
You're giving good supportive care in providing for her physical and medical needs, now just she just needs the time to survive and thrive.

(19,805 posts)For antibiotics to kick in. Heck it took a z pack and 10 days of cephalexin for me to finally blow off strep throat.
Thanks for being a good samaritan.

(15,088 posts)Poor kitty was malnourished and had a chronic infection that had spread to bones and joints. I hate people sometimes.
