The voicemail claimed that they suspended my social security number due to suspicious activity.
Is this another scam?

(16,693 posts)Nor do I answer those calls. A scam. We filed and what little we did get back, was already spent.

(52,111 posts)i've gotten 5 or 6 in a single day, and rarely go a day without getting at least one.
i block the numbers, but that doesn't help much, they just randomly spoof a different number to call "from".
it's an epidemic.

(57,283 posts)202 exchange. I mean, it wasn't on called ID (I don't have that at home), but the number I was told to call if I didn't want to be arrested was 202-something.
It's attempted fraud. You should report the number so that it can be disabled.

(86,307 posts)the SS usually doesn't call you though I have to say that when I was awarded my claim, they did call me to tell me about it but everything we talked about was in writing which arrived later that week. A scam auto-call is the most likely answer. I tell people that if they aren't on my contacts list, I'm not answering. They can send me a text and then I can see if I should respond beyond "delete".

(1,975 posts)Is when they call and tell you that there are "Warrants" for you and you better call this number back ASAP or they will move forward. LOL!!
A buddy of mine screwed with these type folks one time - the ones that call trying to get you to pay for something you allegedly owe with a credit card. He stringed them along like he was sorry for the debt and wanted to pay; gave them two different "fake" CC numbers(changed the order of digits on a real number, different date, etc..); when they said "those cards aren't valid", he replied something like "well, that's the only ones I have, I guess I'll have to pay cash. Where can we meet?". They of course balked and said they needed a credit card or a checking account number, and he kept telling them "this dollar bill says 'for all debts public and private' and that means you have to take it.."; they finally hung up on him. Hilarious!

(32,632 posts)I like to sound interested and then I hit them with it. Ok bob Im ready to hand over my credit card number, but first you have to give a phone number I can call you right back on Bob. If they say they are not allowed to do that I tell them only a scammer wouldnt give out their own personal number or a business number. They hang up. They know they can be tracked down if I have a number to reach them at.

(43,049 posts)so I guess they're getting smarter. Or it's a different group-- must be working if they're ramping up the attacks.
I have no doubt that this scam is well known amongst people who are supposed to know about scams, and someone must think it's more of an emergency than the Mexican border. The problem is dealing with the various technologies that allow them to spoof numbers and make millions of calls without wrecking the system for the rest of is.
