Simon saw DiMaggio in a restaurant and went over to introduce himself -- usually not the best course when dealing with DiMaggio. Joe told Simon that he hadn't gone anywhere, and asked why he had used his name in that way. Simon responded that he needed a name that everyone would recognize, and that DiMaggio fit the bill as well as the rhythm of the song. That mollified DiMaggio to an extent.
