Yeah, I have to agree with a lot of what this guy is ranting about.

(7,488 posts)I didn't watch the whole rant but the show's narrative and logic seems to have given way to lots of battles and CGI, even though it is still fun to watch. The showrunners were on Kimmel last night and said they are going on a long vacation when the final episode airs. I love the show but I'm afraid there is going to be a lot of criticism.

(6,261 posts)That moment you realise Melisande arriving was unexpected and so the fire araks were a bonus. Meaning they were originally going to charge with the fire-less versions, even blinder and less effective.

(6,709 posts)George RR Martin wrote the Song of Ice and Fire; HBO has a show called Game of Thrones.
Defeating the Night King should have been the last, and greatest accomplishment of our heroes, not a way station toward landing somebody's butt on the Iron Throne.

(60,010 posts)the show moved on past his existing books.

(47,535 posts)At that time, I thought about not watching the show anymore until the books came out.
Then I let out a little whimper, realizing that there's no way the watchers of the show would ever keep their mouths shut the way the readers of the books did. And given the reality of today's media, they shouldn't even be expected to. When the end of this show happens in three weeks, it'll be everywhere. (Actually, two weeks and a day, if they don't skip any Sundays.)
So I watch GOT, kind of sad that I'll know the end before I read the final two books.
I get through it knowing that Tolkien's books supersede the Lord Of The Rings movies, and The Song Of Ice And Fire, when and if it's ever completed, will supersede Game Of Thrones.
And as far as those future books go, Martin has released some chapters, so there is something there. I think he just needs an editor to tell him, "Okay, that's enough. No more changes. You're done."

(60,010 posts)I found Martin to be too garrulous. He reminds me of Robert Caro, who wrote LBJ's biography, in 4 volumes. Caro is very voluble and repetitious, the books could have easily been 1/3 shorter.
Worse yet, he only covers LBJ up to JFK's assassination, he is planning another book "soon, he said. That was several years ago, it is nowhere in sight and Caro is 83.
A movie or tv series seriously based on his books would be welcome, soonest.

(47,535 posts)You may have noticed that over the past three seasons the dialog has gotten a lot dumber.
Lack of source material.

(6,261 posts)I'd invite anybody to rewatch the first series and make the comparison. I was drawn to the series because all the characters were so well-drawn, who behaved in a credible fashion according to their own motivations and ambitions, and the story grew organically from the collisions of those ambitions.
Just look at Bran being tossed from the tower, the attempt on his life, the framing of Tyrion for same, his arrest by Katelyn Stark, and then Jaime reaction to the arrest of his brother and the eventual death of Ned. Each step in that sequence made perfect sense, given who the characters are and what they believed to be true at the time.
The last few series, the characters are merely meat puppets placed where the plots needs them to be, with many of them just standing around to deliver an occasional line. Varys, for example was one of the most intriguing characters from the first series who now just appears to stand around surplus to requirement. Whole storylines were dropped without thought: the Tyrells, the wolves. What ever happened to Dario Nahar, btw?
As I said, the dropoff is dramatic
