Anyone else think there should be more cop shows on TV?

I mean, if there's one thing that's not sickeningly overdone, it's police shows. I was thinking maybe a show that focuses on an urban police department, with a man and a woman as the protagonists. And watch out! The sexual tension between them would be so thick, you could cut it with a knife! Then, you could have a wise-cracking partner, and have each episode rip real events from the headlines and use those!

All of those ideas - never been done before. I challenge any of you to find a show like this, because I can't find it! Anyone who did this would be a true innovator! You know, as opposed to a just adding another show to the list of uninspired shows that are basically the same show written over and over again, but with slight differences, a hard-hitting police drama would be a truly refreshing change. A new police drama - any new police drama - would never fit into the category of uninspired, pandering tripe. Nope, not at all.

I was thinking almost the same thing only about a private investigator. He's not really that great looking but he's a real ladies man. He has some some sort of signature identifier like a moustache, or a rain coat, or a sucker, or sports car or something. He's an ex cop who got fired because he was too unorthodox for the commissioner's liking. He's been known to drink and has a few vices like gambling. But although he's a bit rough around the edges (since he tragically lost his wife), he's really a good guy deep down.

Sometimes he gets his info from some hip shady dude on the wrong side of town who's trying to go straight. Sometimes he blackmails his old buddies at the crime lab for favors. Sometimes he follows his suspect and takes photographs of them before setting them up in a clever entrapment. But he never gets implicated in it because at the last moment before the police arrive his sexy secretary saves his ass. You never quite know if he's banging her or if they just have a close platonic relationship.
