audience "participation" ! So much more fun when people yell bravo -- or even if they hiss, as they did in Paris when they didn't like the conductor and the orchestra responded by stomping our feet on the orchestra pit floor to drown out the hisses because we liked the conductor!

of Samuel Ramey in the middle of his Attila performance in Venice. My colleagues said it hadn't happened there since the 1950's (this was in the late 80s). I thought: hah! And he's American!

Music is SUPPOSED to move you this way, the spontaneous burst of feeling in the musical moment this wonderful child, he felt it and at such a young age. I was truly beside myself, ah the mind of a child.
