Disney is coming out with its own streaming service. I heard NBC is coming out with one, too. Then you have Amazon, Hulu, Apple and of course Netflix. And the more services there are, the less that any one service you do subscribe to has what you want.
We were pitched the idea that streaming would be more efficient than cable because you could watch whatever, whenever.
But it's clear to watch whatever, whenever, you have to subscribe to 10 different streaming services.
And with the death of the video store (and the extreme limitations of physical rental services like RedBox), it's harder and harder to be able to watch all the movies you want without subscribing to multiple streaming platforms.
So they're gouging you, too, just like the cable company gouges you.*
They've become the same beast they've claimed to have slain.
*Actually, I'm lucky that my cable is included in my HOA. But if it wasn't, they'd be gouging me.

(97 posts)Netflix and Hulu are enough.
I have a subscription to Shudder (horror) as well.
Anything else I just obtain....via other means.

(12,618 posts)My wife makes fun of me for continuing to invest in "obsolete technology" as she calls it. But I plan on building up a large library of the movies I love so I don't have to rely on what Netflix, Hulu, and Amazon offer, which can disappear or change at any moment.
By the way, if you're a fan of classic movies that rarely appear on most streaming services, I highly recommend www.criterionchannel.com.
It's the entire criterion collection available in streaming format. So I have that, Amazon Prime, Netflix, Hulu, and my ever-growing disc library which I've been collecting for 18 years now. Also recently invested in an HD TV antennae, so I can get free over the air TV for local shows, sports and news, which in my area comes to about 50 channels. It's enough.

(779 posts)You don't have to subscribe. Just pay for what you watch. Some content is free, with ads. Or you can pay for the highest Netflix tier and rent the disc for most things that don't stream, which we do.
As to the main point, yeah, it seems like it's headed that way, but I hope not. Right now, Netflix and Hulu together get us most of what we want.
