20 some years ago I went to London solo for a few days, my first visit abroad and I was a young stupid neocon idiot then, though I conducted myself with the utmost politeness took great pains to avoid looking like a tourist. I remember walking and coming upon a large beautiful cat sitting on the stoop of a row-house. My first thought was "Wow, a British cat! They look just like ours!" Didn't look any different from any domestic cat I've seen but I must have been under the thrall of "American Exceptionalism" to react the way I did. I chuckled to myself at how stupid a reaction it was; did I expect it to have porkchop sideburns and a curved stemmed pipe?

One of the moments in my life I'll never forget.
