Poking and prodding and testing and beeping from 10p-7a. Dad's finally able to sleep more than an hour.

(16,646 posts)A friend of mine was taking the night shift while his dying mother was in the hospital. He finally took a chair and sat outside the room, blocking the door. Anyone came by he tried to work out a "schedule" to minimize the interruptions. He actually got it down to 1 nightly visit.

(10,885 posts)While the answer I got makes sense, it didn't make me happy.
They do all the blood work and vital signs testing through the night so that the results are ready and waiting when the doctors come in for their rounds in the morning. They're usually just there for the morning hours and don't wish to be delayed so that they can get in to their offices for the afternoon.
The patient's lack of sleep is for the doctor's convenience. Hmmph.
