A luxury superyacht owned by an Italian billionaire was lost at sea after it slipped from a cargo ship into the Mediterranean.

My Song, a 40-meter (130-foot) Baltic 130 Custom sailing yacht, owned by the fashion heir Pier Luigi Loro Piana, was being transported between the Spanish island of Mallorca and the Italian city of Genoa when the incident occurred. It was the final leg of its voyage from the Caribbean, according to media reports supported by maritime tracking data.

The prize-winning yacht was later pictured half-submerged in the sea.

In June, My Song was to compete as a returning winner in the annual Loro Piana Superyacht Regatta, to be held in Porto Cervo on the Italian island of Sardinia. The regatta is hosted by Loro Piana, heir to the high-end clothing company of the same name, and worth an estimated $1.6bn in 2018, according to Forbes magazine.

6. Don't worry for the owners

It was probably insured. Now the insurance company will jack up the rates on everyone else to pay for their loss. What the insurers don't cover the owners will sue the shipping company for and in turn, they will raise their rates and not give raises to those who actually work on the ships. I wouldn't be surprised if the insurance company also sues the shipping company to recoup some of their losses.

One thing about the super wealthy, they will never lose money over something like this. it's the peons who will pay. One way or another.

If the yacht was on its way from Mallorca, which is an island in the Mediterranean, to Genoa, which is a port on the Mediterranean, why was the final leg of the voyage from the Caribbean?

That's like saying a Greyhound bus on its way from Washington, D.C. to New York City had a breakdown near Albuquerque.

...of why a sailing yacht is not simply being sailed from Mallorca to Genoa - i.e. that this journey was but the last segment of a longer transatlantic shipment as cargo. At least that’s how it struck me. Otherwise, why ship a ship from Mallorca to Genoa?

29. The yacht was probably shipped across the Atlantic, the ship then stopped in Mallorca

and was on its way to Genoa, the yacht's final destination. When they transport racing yachts, either by land or sea, they take down the mast and rigging. It's a big job to re-rig these sailboats and get them ready to race again.
