Pickled, canned, asparagus is awesome.

I like the way it makes my pee smell different.

I don't mind canned asparagus. I'll have it on my salad on occasion, just for something different. I just use it straight from the can, without heating it.

It's also not bad in Cream of Asparagus soup. Not as good as fresh, but if you have a hankerin' for the soup, and asparagus is not in season/too pricey, it is acceptable, IMHO.

I have since tried fresh. I like to dip the spears in Green Goddess salad dressing.

And, regardless of whether you prepare it that way or steam it, it's doubly delicious cold with either an Asian sesame dressing, or a dressing of lemon juice, olive oil and garlic. Or, your favorite Italian dressing.

You can't get one to taste like the other at all so it's like having two totally different veggies. I like to just open a can and eat it right out of the can.

both delicious.

I was a rotten kid and hated vegetables and hid them rather than ate them and vexed my mother so....I was in my 40s before I found out what a dumbass I was and asparagus was the thing that showed me how wonderful veggies could be. My wife made me try some of her asparagus in cream of mushroom soup covered with shredded cheddar cheese and cooked until the cheese melted and then I was mad at her for not making me try it sooner.

Ever since then I have been trying to make up for lost time and I eat enough of that asparagus casserole that I doubt I will ever wither.

But I have yet to meet an asparagus I didn't like. Canned or fresh, casserolled or roasted. Bring them to me.

Bears no discernible relation to fresh asparagus, mind, but wonderful stuff, very, very soft....

I liked the taste of asparagus but when Mom made it fresh it was usually woody and undercooked. The soft, canned stuff I would eat every day if I could.

Lately I haven't made it at all either way but I think I would prefer fresh that is cooked properly but has some "bite" to it.

14. FYI: Old frozen asparagus bland

A timely asparagus thread. Digging into the back of the freezer yesterday I found a Birds Eye Steamer bag of asparagus that stated "best before January 2010".

I figured since it was frozen solid, how could it go bad. After steaming it up I gave it the taste test, and there was no discernible asparagus taste. Totally bland, so I tossed it.

Moral of the story, ignore the best before date at your peril.

And you absolutely must have asparagus - It also works well as a soup base.

me green pee, just very stinky pee.

I never knew that not everyone's pee smells after eating the stuff, PLUS...not everyone can actually smell the stinky asparagus pee.

Seafood does the same thing only worse. A few hours after eating it, my pee smells like chum left in the sun too long.

I still think canned asparagus is nasty.

Gray/green. Mushy and slimy.

Plenty of butter & pepper. Fresh is way better though.

You could also keep a canned version around if you feel the need to cast asparagus at anyone or their lame political views.
