(12,858 posts)IIRC Camp Fire Girls was founded before Girl Scouts.
But by 60s or so fiamilies wanted sons in Boy Scouts, daughters in Girl Scouts. And CFG got reputation of being softer in some ways than Girl Scouts. The latter began to thought as better at preparing girls to be independent women in the modern world.
I loved being a CFG, the camping, the songs, the achievement beads, the council fires and its songs, the ceremonial gown that I decorated.

(16,334 posts)I'm pretty sure my mother made us do this to get us out of the house.Funny though, I was recently remembering the mom who was our group leader. I adored her. She wore dresses every day and she made those Barbie cakes where the Barbie sticks out of a big hoop skirt. I'm sure I was just idolizing her for being what seemed to me the perfect mom but she was so nice to all of us. I tried to google her daughter but I can't find her.
You mention the songs. I swear I still remember a lot of them!

(12,858 posts)Went to camp every summer, starting as young as I could.
State CFG camp had a counselor in training program that I took part in after 10th, 11th, 12th grades. One summer when I was in college I got a job as a camp counselor with the Grand Rapids council.
I still remember the pledges for TrailSeeker, WoodGatherer, FireMaker, and TorchBearer. And the processional and recessional for the council fires. And what we were told was the council fire song sung at camp if someone got a rank there.
Then there were the action songs the TorchBearers were allowed to sing, like 'Burn fire, burn.'
