The DU Lounge
Related: Culture Forums, Support ForumsHello. I'm a new poster here at DU..
Just want to say hi and that I'm glad to be here. I lurked here for a while and finally registered so I could respond to some of the interesting posts that i've seen.
I'm a lifelong Dem from a Dem family. It's good to have a troll free place for discussions.

This place isn't without its flaws, but they're relatively minor compared to every other political discussion forum I've ever checked out.

(53,410 posts)And be sure to visit The Lounge where everyone gets along because nasty stuff isnt allowed. After a particularly cantankerous session in General Discussion or Democratic Primaries you can rest and recover there.
Welcome to DU!
On the left side of the Homepage, there's a pulldown menu of various topics. Scroll to the bottom until you see Places. Click on US and a list of states will come up. Scroll down to yours and click it. Click the "subscribe" button just under the header.
Welcome to DU!

Very helpful.

(26,454 posts)I was aware of DU back in the Bush years, read some stuff here then, but at that time I was posting at other sites. I live in a blue state but my local community is pretty conservative so it's a relief to have a place to go to that's more sane.

(2,137 posts)Re: Trolls--sometimes even someone who seems to be on our right (or rather, left) side will push and needle a point that doesn't serve the cause of truth, empowerment of others or unity.
In my book that equals trolling.
It's fine to disagree and if a person needs clarification, they should respectfully ask for it; I find it a disservice to the cause to try and pin someone down and back them into a corner to suit one's personal purity test.
Enough pontification. Offering a confession, now.
I get so discouraged so easily that I have to limit my exposure to the outrage that is today's world. At night, I try to think of puppies, kittens, bunnies, ducklings and brand new baby pigs in order to quiet my mind.
What's your go to warm and fuzzy image?
wnylib
(26,454 posts)Often cat pics and videos but not limited exclusively to them. I've had dogs, cats, and birds (not always at the same time) in the past.
Developed an allergy to birds and don't have space now for dogs so that limits me to a cat.
Can also get r & r through time with friends when news and politics are forbidden topics. Nothing like good, laughing fun to revive spirits.
Or, when I need to reflect and "reset" myself alone, a nature walk is a good way.

(42,391 posts)Howdy and welcome to DU! Glad to make your acquaintance.
I am here in Pittsburgh for over 30 years, but before that I lived in upstate New York. Loved it there too, but Pittsburgh is my home.
wnylib
(26,454 posts)I just noticed your post.
I had an aunt who moved to Pittsburgh. Although she passed away some years ago I suppose her kids and grandkids stayed in the area. Don't know for sure since I come from a HUGE extended family. Hard to keep track of them all.
Usually she came up north for family events since the rest of the family stayed in the Erie area. But I remember a couple trips to Pittsburgh as a child to visit her. I was pretty young so what I remember most are the hills. And an outing to the zoo.

But no to hip fan. Never really took to it and feel a bit old for it. Classic rock and some r & b are more my style.

(2,657 posts)1. Please feel free to praise people wherever you can. If you like what someone says, please feel free to say so. It will often make both you and that person smile.
2. The more controversial the subject, the more that you may want to choose your words carefully.
3. Feel free to disagree with people, but remember this guideline: The more politely that you disagree with others, the more politely they will tend to respond to your disagreement.
Have fun!

Kick in to the DU tip jar?
This week we're running a special pop-up mini fund drive. From Monday through Friday we're going ad-free for all registered members, and we're asking you to kick in to the DU tip jar to support the site and keep us financially healthy.
As a bonus, making a contribution will allow you to leave kudos for another DU member, and at the end of the week we'll recognize the DUers who you think make this community great.
