How did Dan and billy let law enforcement or the Iowa baseball boy’s family know that he was dead?

I read the book but can’t remember.

1. As I remember it, shortly after they found the boy

they discussed making an anonymous phone call to law enforcement a few weeks later. They didn’t want anyone to remember two strangers coming to town, renting hotel rooms, and then buying shovels.

But I don’t remember if King ever mentioned later in the book that they made that anonymous call.
