8. I Am Raising My 3rd Rescue Squirrel

His name is Squirt. He is the 1st male that we have raised. He is 8 now. My first was named Poopy. She was paralyzed when we got her and the vet told us she wouldn't live through the night. She regained the full use of 3 legs and partial use of the 4th. She lived to be 7. PNutt was the middle one. She was my husband's best friend. She slept in bed with him, took showers with him, and was at his side all day long when my husband was disabled with heart trouble. She also lived to be 7.

They make great pets if you spend time with them and do not keep them locked up 24/7. I don't know what I would do without having one to care for.

Do they have the constant need to chew like rabbits? I had a rabbit for years and letterbox trained her, but I did have to keep an eye when I allowed her out because of the chewing instinct.

If they do not have something to chew on, their teeth will get overgrown. The best thing to give them to chew on is Deer Antler. Calcium is the key to raising healthy squirrels from a baby. They will take kitten's milk, but not cow's milk. We always used a reptile calcium powder when they are still taking milk. Then we used it mixed in a tad of peanut butter to ween them off the milk. They are full grown at 6 months, so bone growth requires lots of calcium or they will develop Metabolic Bone Disease and suffer from painful joints like our first little girl did. She had been kicked out of the nest and ignored by her mother. We saved her life and kept her for 7 years. She did not have strength in her joints, so we had to pick her up and carry her. I used to take her in the car with me when I would go to the bank. The tellers would all come to the drive through to see her. Much of this information can be found online, and there are several websites dedicated to raising them.

I would love a pet squirrel, but would be worried about a mess and smell. Is 7-8 years old an average life-span for them? I had no idea they could make such good pets. They are just so adorable!

My husband has had a Blue & Gold Macaw since 1978. He has a 4 foot by 4 foot cage that is 7 feet tall. We bought a second cage for our squirrel. We used wire shelving cut offs to make areas for him to play on inside of the cage. There is a long perch running across the cage, and a long shelf running across below that. We put the food bowl on that shelf, and use a hanging water bottle for him on one side.

From the time that he was a baby in the palm of my hand, I always used a dish towel for him to wee on. While young, they have to be touched to stimulate that function. Our cage has a wire bottom, with a full pullout pan underneath. We used ground up mail and papers for the filling in the pan. Some odorless cat litter absorbs the odor. We placed a dish towel in one lower corner of the cage when we first introduced him to it, and he would always go to his towel to tinkle. Later, we were able to take the towel away, yet he would do to that corner to tinkle, as he does to this day. We change the paper and spray down the pan with Lysol about once every 2 months. He is housebroken.

The 2 females were different. They both would "mark" their territory by tinkling. They did have to be cleaned up after. But for the other, they also just did it and let if fall into the pan. We have a hanging Hamster Bed that he sleeps in and we give him small towels to make his bedding out of.......along with used dryer sheets.

We have not been able to put up a xmas tree since 1996. The first year that we had the handicapped Squirrel, she would go over to the tree and bat the lowest ornaments with her hands. She would also come from around the tree with a huge mouthful of fluff to take back to her cage. Some things you just sacrifice for your pets.

All 3 of ours have essentially had the run of the house, but the safety of their cage. We only lock them up when we are away. The Macaw screams if the squirrel does something that it is not supposed to do, like climbing on the food cart to feed itself. The 2 of them, the bird and the squirrel, are a hoot. They tease each other but never hurt each other. They will climb on the other one's cage, even go inside, but they have never tried to attack each other.

Sorry for talking so much, but my squirrel is my life.

I find it very interesting. I never thought it was actually possible to have a squirrel as a pet, so this is all very educational for me! Thank you for sharing your experience!

Her nails look freshly manicured, her whiskers are lush, and what a poser. She was born for this.
The one shot is centerfold material.

Their nails have to be trimmed weekly. If done from an early age, they are easily trained to accept it. We use a regular pair of nail clippers and emory boards to keep ours trimmed. We always give him a treat when we are finished, and he looks forward to having that done.

Having raised 3 now, I can tell you that just like humans, every one of them has their own different personality. Training them not to climb and go where they are not allowed takes time and patience. No curtain climbers out of the 3 that we have raised. But you will have to learn how to put up with scratch marks on your furniture and your baseboards. LOL

I have been a lurker for decades. Just politically upset to the point of needing to have my voice heard, if only by others who think like I do.
