'Well, what can you expect of a country that commits matricide?' Said mid 70s by Canadian to my husb

We were spending his sabbatical yr in Newfoundland CA. There was a lot of street violence in US at the time. It was being publicized and discussed all over the world.

Some of that was mentioned during a faculty get together. One of the Canadians said this semi jokingly

We no longer have a 'Mother England'. We effectively committed 'matricide'

My now ex still laughs about the charge

We did not kill our Mother Country. We certainly stopped short of what the French did to their reigning monarchs.

We moved out on our own and for awhile, Mother was subsidizing the rent. At some point, we felt that we had a handle on things and wanted a direct say in family matters. Mother refused so then we went full-blown adolescent rebellion.

After a number years, we patched things up with Mother and realized how much we have in common. Now, we enjoy a warm relationship--most of the time.
