you like to practice every year?
We usually write down on a slip of paper what we are grateful for and put the slip of paper in a basket and then pass it around the table. (usually after dinner and before dessert.)
Every person has to pull out one slip of paper and then try to guess who the person was who wrote it. If they can't figure it out, then other people can chime in. It usually ends up being pretty funny. Some of the people in my family have a pretty good sense of humor. It definitely beats getting into a political discussion.

(456 posts)Between the main meal and dessert, we went around the table and told a story about something we did growing up that the parents were not aware of. The Idea is that enough time had gone by (10 0r more years) that they couldn't get in trouble.
In grade school I was often late getting home late from school. I explained to my Mom that I was with my buddies putting pennies on the train track to get flatten out. My Dad thought that was funny but my Mom kept crying "My Baby was hanging around the railroad tracks".
And that was the last year of THAT tradition...,

Otherwise, drinks, football, drinks, food, drinks then cards. Night caps.
One other tradition: We never buy anything on Black Friday.

(63,221 posts)I don't get it. I hate to shop as it is, but to shop under those conditions just seems insane. And I hate getting up early.
We do a pretty good job at trying to respect each other's political boundaries. It just depends upon how much people have had to drink and who makes the first slip. I usually just excuse myself and go to my room if I am outnumbered. I'd rather not argue with them. It's pointless. It also depends upon who is attending. If it's not an even match, I won't even consider it.
