(115,584 posts)She's very fluffy and her fur tends to mat, but she hates being brushed. She hates it so much that she bites when I try, though otherwise she's a nice, friendly cat. So she's a tangled mess, and the vet recommended bringing her in so she can be sedated (she can't be groomed when she's fully conscious because she bites; I warned the vet that they'd probably have to dart her like a charging rhino) and then substantially de-furred like the poor beasts in the photos. Then I can get her accustomed to being brushed while her fur grows back. I'm not looking forward to this, though.

(22,461 posts)People would make comments about how I should brush her and I would just say, "YOU DO IT" and hand them a brush. She was impossible. So I would take her to get shaved but she hated going to the groomers also so I felt bad about that!
I loved her so much but she tormented me.

(115,584 posts)She bites hard when I try to get anywhere near the matted fur (she even bit through my leather rose gloves) - I have just about every brush and grooming tool ever made and she won't tolerate any of them. I took her to a groomer before and that was a struggle; maybe it gave her a complex. I think the mats are uncomfortable for her, not to mention a bit unsanitary. I don't care about being embarrassed at the vet (I'm not) and I owe it to the cat to get her cleaned up even if she hates it. The fur will grow back and maybe by then she'll be more comfortable with brushing.

(7,808 posts)I used to have a long hair who did not like to be brushed. He didn't bite or scratch, he just ran off and wouldn't let me brush him. So, I took him to the vet on grooming day so he could be sedated (he had stress problems with strangers) and he got the lion cut like the cats above. Since I live in the Mojave Desert, staying warm in the summer wasn't a problem.
His brother was funny. The first time the long hair was shaved, bro didn't look twice. The second time, bro freaked out. He took one look at his hairless brother and hissed and ran up and bopped him a few times. I stayed with the shaved kitty for the next several hours just to avoid any potential problems.
