I had to administer meds to my cat tonight.

He’s going through a bout of diarrhea, cause unknown. Vet was a bit stumped, but asked for a fecal sample.

Kitty has been leaving samples nightly in our (unused) upstairs bathroom. Not much fun to clean up, but he’s clearly trying to tell us all is not well.

So.. I roped dh into helping me give kitty some liquid oral med tonight. Dh held him in the kitchen while I administered the meds. Kitty was very unhappy. In fact, he immediately squatted down and let out a long stream of diarrhea. On my kitchen floor. Yay.

Poor kitty.

1. Hey, at least he's not searching for a rug or carpet and doing it there. I have a cat

who does that when she gets the runs, even though there are multiple litter boxes that she is happy to use at other times. Very annoying.

I hope your kitty feels better soon.

I could always tell because he started peeing outside the litter box -- usually on carpets or rugs.

Now have him on a prescription diet (ugh) but he's doing great -- no accidents in months.

You can also give a cat kaopectate...about 5cc if you have a syringe. I always keep 3cc syringes on hand.

4. Kao-Pectate: In US, the active ingredient is now bismuth subsalicylate (the same as in Pepto-Bismol)

If it's not safe to give Pepto-Bismol, don't give US version of Kao-Pectate.

Kaopectate is an orally taken medication from Chattem, Inc. for the treatment of mild diarrhea. It is also sometimes used to treat indigestion, nausea, and stomach ulcers. The active ingredients have varied over time, and are different between the United States and Canada. The original active ingredients were kaolinite and pectin. In the US, the active ingredient is now bismuth subsalicylate (the same as in Pepto-Bismol). In Switzerland, attapulgite is used.

Other animals

The U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) does not have a clear stance on the administration of Kaopectate products on animals such as dogs and cats suffering from diarrhea. However, the Journal of the American Veterinary Medical Association Journal news article noted in 2003 that the new salicylate formulation might be harmful to cats. Kaolin-pectate, the original compound, was approved[when?] by the OTA (Organic Trade Association) for use in animals being produced for food.

whatever it was. Made him start going solid and regular.

Even something as this, I'd freak out and project.

Believing for you both to come to healing for kit and peace for you.

Younger kitty had that last week. She sleeps between us, snuggled against me and facing DH. He was driven out several times from the spray.
