The DU Lounge
Related: Culture Forums, Support ForumsToday, I did something I don't think I have ever done before..?? I used a knife to make a peanut
butter and jelly sandwich, and in an effort to keep the kitchen clean....(something I don't do very well)I washed the knife before I ate the sandwich .........??
I used a paper plate, and when it was all over, knife is in drawer, paper plate thrown out, kitchen table clean, counter clean..(I put the peanut butter away and the jar of jelly away. ).....So, everyone has to do things their own way. I have been living in a place with a kitchen of my own, for about 50 years...give or take a year...and that is the first time I did that....That is all I got to report. It ain't winning the lottery, or getting married, but it is something new.
...Kitchen is spotless...just as it was before the lunch....Oh well.....what is next?
I don't think this has ever been reported before, so that is another thing that is a first!!
I eat PB&J's almost every day for the purpose of not messing up the kitchen...and I really like them. Knife goes into the dishwasher and I eat the sandwich off of a paper towel.
Tonight I am refusing to cook supper because the kitchen is clean and I'm going to leave it that way. Let someone else cook and wash the dishes.

(31,911 posts)dump my salad right on the same plate as my chicken or fish, why wash a separate salad bowl.
Bonus, in the summer, cook the meat on the grill, eat off a paper plate, drink a cold beer right out of the bottle. Knife and fork are all I have to wash. Bottle goes in the recycling. Easy Peasy

I am probably one of the few people who can eat tuna fish right out of the can.

(23,295 posts)I love to use my kitchen and everything in it. I dont even mind cleaning it all up. Theres something zen-like about cleaning up my work space and thoughtfully putting everything in its place again. I LOVE walking into a tidy kitchen and imagining what to create next. I even like folding cloth napkins. Sigh.

(31,911 posts)And try a new recipe and make a big mess. Or like when I make artisan bread.
But the older I get, it seems the less ambition I have!

(2,947 posts)I wash my dishes by hand as I am preparing the meal. My dishwasher has been used so few times over the years it finally just quit. I think it is corroded with hard water. It does make a wonderful storage area!
There are only 2 in our house, other than the pup, so I have few dishes to wash. I like my kitchen to be spotless when I leave it.
I use cloth napkins as well. I love going into stores & finding new napkin sets. I bought many of my napkins at Carolina Pottery in Smithfield, NC, many years ago. Back then they were fairly cheap, not so much these days, but I do keep my eyes out for good deals.

(23,295 posts)and still use a lot of those I sewed myself. Ive actually found some lovely napkins on close out at Target and World Market that have been very durable.
Similar to your household, we only have 3 of us...and also like you, I wash things by hand as I prepare a meal. I use the dishwasher for plates, silverware and glasses but prefer to wash my cookware and pottery by hand. Im sure it would be different if I had a bigger family or if I were by myself. For now, I enjoy preparing a meal while chit chatting with my husband and son

(38,414 posts)Then when I got enough stuff in the sink, I wash them all. My dish wash washer broke down 10 to 15 years ago, and I think it is better for me to stand and wash the stuff. (at least that is my thinking...occasionally I use a real dish, and real glass glasses.) Just to try to be a little different. As you guessed, I live alone...

(7,275 posts)is that it will get rinsed off as I use the water faucet for other purposes, thus not wasting water. Growing up in drought-ridden California has produced life-long habits like that, I think.
Or, it's an excuse for laziness...

(16,950 posts)so were planning on making lots of dish messes to test it out, lol.
I always rinse and sudsy sponge everything that goes in the dishwasher, but this new-fangled one says you can put dirty dishes right in. Well see....
Enjoy your clean kitchen!
