but I did find a dusty copy of "The 39 Steps" atop a wardrobe in a London hotel room in 1986.

I haven't read that one either, sadly.

yes, Buchan has "dated", and some of his attitudes don't stand up well, but that's one of the reasons I find him interesting. Who wants to read writers whose attitudes always agree with yours? 39 Steps, by the way, is very, very different from the Hitchcock film...
